What a ceramic coating is

A ceramic coating is a liquid polymer that chemically bonds to your paint and cures into a hard, transparent, sacrificial layer. Unlike wax — which sits on top and washes away in weeks — a coating becomes part of the surface. It resists UV fade, road grime, bug acid, bird droppings, and water spotting, produces a depth of gloss wax can’t reach, and makes the car dramatically easier to clean, because contaminants bond to the coating instead of your clear coat and rinse off with far less effort.

What it does and doesn’t do

Straight talk, because this industry oversells: a coating will make your paint glossier, easier to wash, far more resistant to chemical etching and UV, and it will hold that for years with proper care. It will not make your paint bulletproof. It doesn’t stop rock chips, it won’t prevent a shopping cart from denting a door, and it isn’t a substitute for washing the car. Anyone promising scratch-proof paint is selling something.

Why correction has to come first

A coating locks in whatever is underneath it. Apply one over swirl marks and you’ve sealed the swirls in for years. That’s why our ceramic package includes the complete Paint Correction package — clay bar plus multi-step machine correction — before a drop of coating goes on. It’s also why our price is higher than the shops offering a coating alone: they’re coating the car you brought in; we’re coating the car after we’ve made it right.

Add-on coatings

Ceramic Window ($19) — water sheets off the glass and night driving in rain improves noticeably. Ceramic Interior ($19) — protects interior surfaces from staining and UV. Ceramic Leather ($29) — seals leather against dye transfer from jeans and body oils. Small money relative to the main service, and worth it on a coated car.

Keeping it right

A coating performs based on how it’s maintained. Automatic brush washes will degrade it — the thing that created the swirls in the first place. Hand washing with clean media, or our $75/month Maintenance Program, is how a coating still looks like this in year three. We’ll walk you through aftercare at pickup, and the Maintenance Program exists precisely so you don’t have to think about it.

Is it worth it?

On a vehicle you plan to keep several years, or one you want to present exceptionally at sale, yes — it’s protection and appearance in one purchase, and it saves hours of washing over its life. On a lease you’re returning in eight months, probably not; a Full Detail is the better spend. We’ll tell you which situation you’re in.
